School-Based Counseling
Young children often are unable to
express their feelings using words. FSA staff uses art, puppets,
clay and other methods to help at-risk children express themselves.
School-Based Counseling provides counseling and support to elementary
and middle school-aged children and their families in the following
districts:
How does it work?
Children are referred to counselors by parents, teachers, principals,
or by a school's Child Study Team. The counselor visits with parents
to obtain permission to work with the child and to answer any questions
regarding the program. Counselors meet with children either individually
or in small groups to help them resolve difficulties and learn new
coping skills.
What does it cost?
There is no cost to the families of the children involved. The program
is supported by local school districts, private foundations, individuals,
special event funds, the Santa Barbara County Alcohol and Drug Program
and state monies designated for tobacco use prevention.
